Every February, Black History Month invites us to reflect not only on people, but on impact.
This year, we’re taking a STEM-focused approach—looking at how Black history is woven into the scientific foundations that shape the modern world. Before technology, before engineering, before medicine, there was science.
Science is where systems begin.
Why Science Comes First
Science is the groundwork of everything that follows. It provides the principles behind measurement, materials, accuracy, safety, and data—concepts that quietly support industries like engineering, construction, technology, and the built environment.
Without scientific discovery, there are no tools to apply, no systems to build, and no standards to trust.
When we talk about STEM, science isn’t just one letter in the acronym—it’s the base layer.
Black Scientists and Foundational Knowledge
Black scientists have contributed to foundational scientific knowledge for centuries, often while working within systems that restricted access to funding, institutions, and recognition.
Physicist Edward Bouchet, the first Black American to earn a PhD in physics, advanced scientific education at a time when Black scholars were largely excluded from academic research spaces.
Chemist Marie Maynard Daly, the first Black woman to earn a PhD in chemistry, conducted groundbreaking research that helped establish the relationship between cholesterol and heart disease—work that reshaped scientific understanding and future research standards.
Biologist Ernest Everett Just challenged dominant assumptions in cell biology, contributing to how scientists understand cellular development and structure.
These contributions weren’t isolated achievements. They became part of the scientific framework that informs how modern systems are researched, measured, and designed.
From Discovery to Systems
Scientific discoveries don’t stay confined to laboratories or textbooks. Over time, they become:

● Measurement methodologies
● Safety protocols
● Data models and analytical tools
Science turns observation into reliability. It’s how uncertainty becomes consistency—and how trust is built into systems we rely on every day.
Many of the systems we now consider “standard” are built on scientific work that was historically underrecognized, even as its influence expanded across industries.
Why This History Still Matters
Black history is not separate from modern practice.
The tools, methods, and systems we use today are shaped by scientific contributions that span generations. Understanding where that knowledge comes from helps us better understand the systems we inherit—and the responsibility we have to build thoughtfully on top of them.
Recognizing this history isn’t about revisiting the past for its own sake. It’s about acknowledging that innovation has always been broader, deeper, and more inclusive than it was often allowed to appear.
